India’s first film museum in Mumbai

Mumbai: In honour of Indian cinema, its rich history and its vibrant culture, a museum is being built in Mumbai. The museum will be ready for visitors in a year and is expected to become the city’s major attraction for film-lovers.

As Indian cinema celebrates its 100th year on May 3, 2013, the Films Division of India under the aegis of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is planning to build India’s first film museum by 2013. The National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) will showcase the evolution of Indian cinema.

Apart from reflecting the vibrancy of numerous biographies, NMIC will serve as a window for film aficionados to touch and feel the history of Indian films and understand the industry better. NMIC will house artefacts, classic cameras, projectors, costumes, photographs and other study material.

NMIC is being constructed within the premises of the Films Division Complex on Peddar Road, Mumbai. One floor will display artefacts representing the history of Indian cinema, while another section will be a constantly changing space portraying the evolution of of the Indian film history.
